April 2020 Partnership Against Crime Taskforce Stats
With the COVID-19 restrictions impacting the wider community and general domestic crime reporting to Police significantly reduced, PACT Site Security has had a total of 61 reports for the month of April. Reports included 11 x burglaries, 5 x attempted burglaries, 23 x stealing, 6 x damage, 2 x graffiti and 14 illegal rubbish dumping.
With much of the community complying with isolation restrictions and staying/working at home, it could be considered that the building and construction industry could be susceptible to an increase in onsite theft. This, to date, has certainly not been the case for PACT Site Security members with a total of 47 crime reports for the month, a similar number to the previous March reports of 42.
Hot spot areas for the month were Treeby with 7 reports, Golden Bay 5, Madora Bay 5 and Baldivis 5, with 40 reports occurring in the southern suburbs.
Theft of hot water units was relatively low with a total of 4 reports, 2 in Piara Waters and 1 in Golden Bay.
The theft of an installed hot water unit in Riverton resulted in the arrest of an adult male from Shelley. PACT investigators installed a GPS tracking device at the Perception site after the theft of a hot water unit back in March, more information HERE
A male and female from Armadale were charged with one count of Burglary and one count of Unlawful Possession after two burglaries on a Home Group site in Baldivis. Investigators installed GPS tracking into a free-standing oven at the site after the first Burglary, offenders returned two days later and removed the oven. Investigators tracking the oven to a number of addresses in Armadale, more information HERE.
Joondalup Detectives charged two juveniles in relation to a series of damage incidents in the Woodvale and Wangara areas on April 8th, 2020.
It is alleged between midnight and 3.25am, the boys damaged tyres and broke windows on several vehicles and broke into BGC Housing site where they threw paint throughout the interior.
PACT Investigators attended the area and liaised with Forensic Police passing on CCTV footage obtained from local residents, this assisted Police in identifying the youths.
The boys, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, both from Wanneroo have each been charged with:-
• Two counts of Criminal Damage;
• One count of Aggravated Burglary and Commit; and
• One count of Stealing.
They are due to appear before the Joondalup Children’s Court
Back in June 2019, an adult male was charged with stealing roof battens from BGC Housing site in Golden Bay. At the time, the offender used his girlfriend’s vehicle to commit the offence, which was witnessed by a local resident. The offender failed to appear in court, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. The offender was recently located by Police and finally had his day in court, and he was fined $237 and ordered to pay restitution of $200 to BGC Housing Group.
A significant increase in Illegal rubbish dumping reports over the past the two months could be attributed to many people staying at home involved in some early spring cleaning. Investigators have been liaising with several local councils who have been helpful in removing reported illegal rubbish.
Crime and illegal rubbish dumping, at some point, impact every part of the building and construction process. Braven Group Services/PACT Site Security work with members on a variety of issues affecting their business. Theft of machinery, fuel and assets through the civil contracting stage, ongoing crime impacting builders to illegal rubbish dumping and anti-social behaviours that can affect new estates. If these issues are left unchallenged, the problems will continue and have an increasingly negative impact across the industry.
PACT Site Security works closely with WA Police to provide efficient and effective reporting systems to identify crime trends within the building and construction industry. Accurate reporting of all crime activates resources to reduce theft risk, track and recover property, as well as deter future incidents. Police liaison, GPS Tracking, CCTV, patrols and community engagement are just some of the tactics assisting members to reduce crime.
